Specialized - Big company in Morgan Hill, CA, lots of great bikes and leading designs, weak on customer service

Santa Cruz - One of the best brands, Santa Cruz, CA, great leading edge designs

Ellsworth - Small company, SoCal and Portland, OR, made in USA

Giant - The guys I ride with who have them, like 'em

Salsa - Out of Minnesota, recent entry into dual suspension for real riding

Trek - Big Company in Wisconsin, good for beginners, Gary Fisher sold out, but recently looks like getting back to creating bikes people want to buy, instead of trying to maximize profits

Intense - Small company in CA, a friend I ride with has broken lots of their frames ... something about "ever since they started building in Taiwan", but lots of bike frames are built in Taiwan, maybe he was just unlucky
