Step 11: Installing the Hydraulic Disc Brake Levers and Calipers - Front and Rear

Avid Juicy 7's. Levers, hoses and calipers come already assembled and the hoses need no cutting as they are set to the proper lengths for front and back. This is an easy step save for later when you set the calipers after you put the wheels on with the rotors. Initially you will just lightly tighten both caliper setting bolts. Later, when you have installed the disk rotors onto the wheels and put the wheels on, you will fully tighten the calipers in place. Avid instructions recommend squeezing the brake lever while the calipers are loosely mounted, then tightening. One trick, however, is to only tighten each side of the caliper a little bit at a time, turining one hex bolt a little bit, then moving to the second, then back to the first until both are tightened to the proper torque (80 in-lb for Rear I.S. Mount and 50 in-lb for Front Post Mount). Otherwise you're likely to end up with rotor drag, i.e. calipers not properly aligned. A friend who is a bike mechanic showed me this and it proved essential.
