Step 13: Installing Front and Rear Disc Brake RotorsWe chose 185mm rotor for the front for more stopping power and range as your center of gravity is towards the front of the bike when stopping hard or flying downhill. This means that most of the braking action takes place at the front (click here to see why, or see "The Physics of Braking Systems" White Paper in the Mechanical Section of the MTB Resource Website). Attach the rotor onto the standard 6-point hub mount with the Torx bolts provided by the brake supplier (Avid in our case). We used a Torx bit placed in a standard 1/4-inch drive socket attached to our Park Tool beam torque wrench and tightened to 55 in-lb per Avid’s spec. Tighten each bolt in an opposite-alternating pattern across the six-pointed star, loosely at first to hold the rotor snug so you can adjust and center the rotor. Once you are satisfied that the rotor is centered, tighten each Torx bolt in opposite-alternating fashion to the proper torque. We used a 160mm rotor for the back and mounted in the same fashion to the same torque specification.
