Step 4: Tools You Will Need

Tools

Aside from the basic set of hex wrenches which every rider should have, you’ll need a Headset Cup Press, a Crown Race Setting Tool. Click here to see how we saved hundreds of dollars by making our own Cup Press and CR Setter. You will need a torque wrench with a range of 10 in-lb to 35 ft-lb. In our case this meant three different wrenches to cover the whole range. We also had to invest in socket adapters to go from 1/4” to 3/8” drive, from 3/8” to 1/2” drive and from 3/8” to 1/4” drive. You’ll need a set of metric hex head sockets from 4mm to 8 or 10mm. Don’t skimp here or try to feel your way through the torque thing as the last thing you want to do is muck up your $1600 frame by stripping threads or some other bonehead move...take your time and do it right.
