Yeti 575 Buildout

Step 8: Installing the Fork

Gently slide the crown race which came with the Chris King headset over the 1 1/8" diameter fork stem until it cannot go any further. You will notice the stem begins to flare out along the bottom 1/16" or so where it meets the top of the fork, a.k.a. the fork crown. This ring is what the bottom cup bearings slide (or race) along...hence the term "crown race". Make sure the race is as far down as you can push it without forcing it and that it is straight. Now slide the crown race adapter which came with your headset down over the stem until it sits on top of the race. Like the headset cup press adapters in Step 7, this peice keeps the pressure from the setting tool from crushing the precision race groove. Now slide the homemade crown race setting tool over the fork stem until it rests on the crown race which is positioned straight against the flare. Using a rubber mallet, smack the top of the setting tool with a good amount of force so as to seat it all the way over the flare until it is locked into place where the stem meets the fork crown. Check to make sure it is equally seated along its full circumference. That's it. You have now completed the second most difficult part of building the Yeti.
