Step 9: Installing the Stem and Headset

After sliding the fork steer tube up thru the bottom of the headtube, hold in place and slip the headset's Bearing Cap over the tube and slide it down until it rests on top of the top cup. You've already cut your fork steer tube to the proper length, so slide on the appropriate spacer(s) and the stem. You'll have about 3mm of stem over the top of your steer tube. Now place the stem cap and screw over the top and thread into your star nut, which you've already inserted into your steer tube with the Star Nut Setter 15mm below the top rim of the steer tube. Tighten the stem cap to spec with a torque wrench approximately 10 in-lb with a No. 5 hex bit. Now straighten your stem and tighten the stem screws with torque wrench to spec approximately 8 in-lb with a No. 4 hex bit.
